Cool web 2.0 text with vector background
By Ps graphiX | august 18, 2007
In this tutorial I’ll teach you how to make a web 2.0 style text with a vector style background like you can see on the picture above. The main purpose is to learn you two different techniques, but the outcome of this tutorial is great as a web banner, a forum signature and if you make it in another size, a great wallpaper!
First, start with making a new document with size 600*200. Since it’s going to be a colorful text, we’ll add a dark gradient on the background. The gradient is going to be 0c0c0c in the left end and 313131 in the other. Now i guess you have something like this:
Not much, but now we’ll start on the vector thing. Create a new layer and chose the “Rectangular marquee tool”. Make a rectangular selection holding down Shift. Fill the selection with white (#ffffff) and make another one to the right of the one you just made and fill it with black (#000000). Now you’ll probably have something like this:
The next step now, is to get our two squares to become stripes over the entire document. The way we are going to do that, is to Ctrl click on the icon of this layer in the layers palette (not the text). Now we have a selection around it. Lets chose any selection tool you want now and pres “Alt Gr” and “Shift” while moving the selection. You will also see that the selected area follows horizontally. Cover the document all the way and you’ll have this:
Now just press “Ctrl”+”T” (takes you to free transform) and drag the top and bottom of the layer so that you have what i have in the below picture.
Now go to Edit>Transform>Perspective and drag one of the top corners to the side and one of the bottom corners a bit towards the middle. Set the layer to “Overlay” and the opacity to about 40. Now you finally can see something that looks a bit like what we are going to make. Like this:
Thats it! Finished with the vector background thing. And if you want a beautiful color scheme, just chose the background layer and fill it with a colorful gradient (one color just darker and lighter in the ends). You can use this in wallpapers and other cool things. But here we’ll just keep it dark cause we are going to add text with a strong color.
Now it’s over to the text… Just type whatever you want, but let it be a bold font. On the text you just mad, you are going to add these blending options (click to enlarge):
Now I (and probably you) have this:
Of course, we are also going to add a glossy reflection thing…
Use “circular marquee tool” to select the area of the text you are going to add the effect to and fill it with white (#ffffff). Make a selection around the text (Ctrl click the layers icon in the layers palette) and select inverse the selection (Select>Inverse or Shift+Ctrl+I). Now delete this from your white layer and lower the opacity to something about 15-20.
Now we’re pretty much finished, and after adding a little slogan for fun I got this (click to enlarge):
This is as far as this tutorial goes, but with the same techniques you can make many different things in many color schemes. And things can be added and so further… Just look at this one below. I changed the gradients, added lightning effects and brushed on some vector peoples. Creativity is your only limit (I guess…).
